Nigerian Scam Victims Submitted Story

We agree with our reader who sent in her story of being scammed by Nigerians. Why is the US allowed to send money via Western Union into Nigeria, but Nigeria forbids money to be sent out? WTF Western Union?

ROMANCE DATING SCAMS
In August 2008 I was approached by a young man claiming to be a soccer scout who was traveling in Nigeria to recruit players for his team here in the US. His name was Mark Donovan from VA. He swept me off my feet with his letters and accent. We began what is considered "internet dating" and I thought this guy was "It". Having been out of the dating realm for 15+ years,

I was taken by his compassion and gentle spirit with me. After a while he began to ask me for money, saying that he had used up his resources buying players and their contracts and that he had a check for $450,000 that he was bring back to the US. But he could not cash it overseas. He even sent me a copy of it.

Long story short, I have sent him over $8800 through Western Union, lost everything I had in my storage unit, my credits, bank accounts, clothing credit line, and numerous other things, from letting my responsibilities fall behind while trying to help him. It has now been 8 months and I still have not seen his face on a cam (but he has seen me), and he is still not here. How he says he is in Amsterdam and needs $2,000 to get home. This, after I had sent him $3,000 for planes tickets for his son and him, in November.
Beware!!! EVERYONE!!

If they sound tooo good to be true, they probably are!!! I have gone on CBS in Atlanta and have a web page warning women (and men) that these people are on these sites and they are looking for kindhearted, gentle people like me, to prey upon. The "Pig Buster" got a hold of my guy on here and he has recently deleted his profile from here. But he is OUT THERE!! Somewhere!! He probably has numerous unsuspecting women sending him money on one of those other singles sites.

He goes by "Barclayplayer, M.Donovan, or Barclaycard. If the picture of him is real, he is very good looking, age 42. I plan on going national with this and need as many women who have been taken as I have to come forward. I know it's embarrassing -- BELIEVE ME! I did things I am very ashamed of on my cam, in the name of "love". But if we don't get this out in the open, they will continue to use us and we will continue to go under financially from these bottom feeders.

I have written to Oprah, and Ellen D, and my next letter goes to "The View", and 20-20. My cover letter is being used on various "Cyber Dating Scams" sites now. My mission is to change the laws for sending Western Unions to Nigeria... Their law forbids them to send money to us!!! Well, that just doesn't seem very fair, now does it???!! Why should we be able to send our hard-earned money to them, but they can't send any BACK to us????!! I have had many women come forward who thank me for being strong enough to do this.

  3. What a small world it is...I too ran across the infamous Aaron Gabriel - the FIFA soccer scout who just so happened to have an 800K contract to recruite players for the Nigerian soccer team. Turns out that after less than a week of conversing with him, he solicited me for $1600 to help him pay for the players, and then dropped his asking price down to $700, both of which I didn't pay. I didn't fall for his scam but beware, his yahoo personals id is gabaaron069 and his profile name is Aaron. He has got some professional pictures up there of someone other than him. Funny thing is that his profile stated he was from one city and then a few days later, he was from another city. He even told me the wrong birthday which was different than the one listed in his profile.

  6. I can understand I also know of my best friend who just was scamed about 100,000 Chris Mcgowon was his name (along with 40 other names I'm sure) When she showed me his picture I knew right away this was Bull*** so I tried to stop her but she kept saying trust me. Well I tried but then I started searching the web found him and the other people he scamed. Now my friend is at lost and I wish our TV shows CNN etc... would just keep viewing this I feel the best way to shut this down is by making the Americans aware of this and NOT send anymore money and this will shut these jerks down. I so mad they did this to her. But thank goodness I never let up until I found the truth and proved it. This MUST be stopped.....

  7. I have just stopped having contact with a Dutchman in Nigeria (or so he said). He was called Henry Henk Thomas and supposingly had a son called Michael. I have sent him money too but have finally admitted to MYSELF that he had me on a piece of string. The problem is we (us women) I think are looking for affection and when we hear nice words and receive beautiful emails well we fall head over heels. I wish I knew a way of actually finding this person and stopping this. I would love to come face to face with him.

  8. I think I have been scammed by a Dutch man in Nigeria (said he was born in the UK, grew up in Holland), but his really thick accent is more like a Dutch South African accent. The name he gave me is Abraham Truman, claims he is a widower (wife died of diabetes), only child, with an adopted daughter now 5, who lives with his sister in law in St. Petersburg, Russia. Claims his father was a road engineer who built roads in Dubai as well as S. Africa. He claims to be a timber trader who has overextended himself and needs $250K. His accomplices are an "attorney" named Raphael Rufus (the local bar association has no license number matching that name) and a purported worker at Lagos port where Abraham's timber awaits shipment to Indonesia, Derick Ibeh. Abraham claims to have lived in Colorado, owned an organic farm in Canada, and homes in L.A. and Pomona, CA, all of which he sold to invest in his "timber logs" business. Last had contact with him in Oct. 2010. He was on PerfectMatch. Uses photos of a 6.4" man in tailored suit with Rolex watch prominently displayed, as well as two other photos of himself with brunette girl. He has close cropped brown hair and blue eyes.

  11. I encourage readers that if they have a scammer to report to send it to us via email so we can post it to the site rather than just leave it as a comment. We can also post any photos and other information you may have. (Comments do not let you do that.) Your info will reach more people that way, and more people will be warned before they too are scammed.

  18. I met a man claiming to call himself Paul Smith Philips, born April 10, 1968, who lives in Akron, OH with his 10yr old son. He said he was a Football scout and traveled at least once a year for work. He was sweet, caring got my attention.
I met him on Mingles2, I feel stupid now after almost 5 weeks of chatting by text and calling him on the phone to let it go that long.
There were many signs but my heart was attached and I didnt want to believe it was a scam.
Shortly after we started talking, (about a week) he wanted to go off the site and chat private.
He then said he had to go meet a football club person from Nigeria who was flying to OH to meet him. The next day he said he was going to Nigeria for a month to work on getting 10 players for this club.
We keep texting and chatting. I spoke on the phone about 2 week in and my first impression was that something wasnt right. He has a very strong accent. An accent that doesnt match the pictures he sent me.
Then after another week he was already saying he loved me and calling me baby, sweetheart, and hun. I still didnt want to believe it, even after I was wondering why his profile said he was from LA, Califorina, but he told me he was from Akron, OH.
He excuse for that was that he used to live in LA and moved to OH after his divorce.
So I keep talking to him.
Then he sent me some pictures (and being the person I am, I google serched them), findng of course this site (http://www.romancescam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62815). Questioned him on this and his reply was that his facebook was hacked last year (which he had mentioned in earlier chats), and that this site was from that.
Again I keep chatting with him, falling more and more for him.
Finally, he was set to come in only a week to finally meet me and stay for a visit. But I was feeling so uneasy that I insisted on him sending me a picture of him and his son.
After 3 days of bugging fore a picture he finally sent me a picture, (that I goggle searched) and ofcourse it was a photo shopped picture.
This is the very short story. There are som many more details and things about him that are great sounding and also unesy about him.
You can also check this site for more pictures of him (http://www.romancescam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=51587&p=436685#p436685)

    BEWARE!
